RECYCLING - THE FACTS

There’s a lot of hype and myths about the recycling of paper. So here’s the fact. No fluffy words. Just facts.

WRAP (Waste & Resources Action Programme) commissioned a major international research project.   The study found that 50% less energy was used when recycling paper (instead of incinerating it) over its entire life-cycle. In other words, virgin paper followed by incineration consumed twice as much energy as recycling.

The study identified the environmental benefit of recycling is especially clear in the categories of energy use, energy related impacts, waste generation, waste water and importantly the reduction of carbon emissions (CO2). It concluded recycling of waste paper has a lower environmental impact than the alternatives of land filling or incineration.

According to WRAP, recycled paper is better for the environment than virgin paper. Firstly, it helps divert waste paper away from landfill, and secondly its manufacture is less damaging to the environment than the manufacture of virgin paper.

So that’s the facts (for more information please see www.wrap.org.uk) If someone’s filled your head with nonsense that recycling is just a fad and some marketing hype, maybe its time to make up your own mind.
